Treating Yourself Like a Friend

Often, we're much harder on ourselves than we would ever be on a friend facing the same struggles. Self-compassion involves extending that same kindness, understanding, and support inward, especially during difficult times. Dr. Kristin Neff identifies three core components:

Elements of Self-Compassion:

  1. Self-Kindness vs. Self-Judgment: Being warm and understanding toward ourselves when we suffer, fail, or feel inadequate, rather than ignoring our pain or criticizing ourselves.
  2. Common Humanity vs. Isolation: Recognizing that suffering and personal inadequacy are part of the shared human experience – something we all go through rather than being something that happens to "me" alone.
  3. Mindfulness vs. Over-Identification: Taking a balanced approach to our negative emotions so that feelings are neither suppressed nor exaggerated. Observing our thoughts and feelings without judgment.

Why Practice It?

Research links self-compassion to numerous benefits, including reduced anxiety and depression, increased emotional resilience, greater happiness, and improved relationships. It allows us to acknowledge our imperfections without letting them define us. Mindfull encourages this through non-judgmental logging and reflective journaling.
